Back on the portfolio train

Hey all,

Thanks for stopping by. So, I usually go through ebbs and flows of building my portfolio. Sometimes I really gungho and write/make videos as much as I can. Then, I get down on myself and don’t do anything.

So after thinking long and hard about it, I really, I mean REALLY want to get noticed. So my blog will now be a showcase of my talents. I’ll be posting short stories, my YouTube reviews, and my podcasts.

Here’s my YouTube channel! –

A Green Lantern Reporting Confirmed For Justice League

This is from an article I wrote for The Nerd Stash –

The DCEU is still trying to get a leg up in the comic book movie genre. As anyone can see, Marvel is the king when it comes to making a well fleshed out cinematic universe. DC has had a very rocky road, and with their attempt to play catch up, there are two DC movies slated for this year. One of them is Wonder Woman and the other is their hail mary.

Justice League is due out in November and is directed by Zack Snyder, someone who DC fans are now skeptical about due to his track record with other DC films. Justice League sees Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, Cyborg and Superman go up against Steppenwolf, a notable DC villain. There have been numerous incarnations of Justice League with members rotating left and right. One of the most famous members is Green Lantern.

Jon Stewart, one of the other human Green Lanterns.

Green Lantern is one of an army of Green Lanterns. The Green Lanterns are a peace-keeping core of space cops who patrol the galaxy and make sure everything is good. The most famous, Hal Jordan, who was the first in the comics. Could the Green Lantern make an appearance in Justice League? The Wrap’s Umberto Gonzales did a live Q&A recently to talk about the DCEU. A fan asked him about Green Lantern‘s inclusion in the film and Gonzales said there’s a rumor that a Lantern will appear. Now, he stated it’s a rumor and also if it is true it wouldn’t be Hal Jordan. He said the Lantern has a “funny sounding name”.

There are millions of Green Lanterns across the galaxy, across all alien races. So, it could be an alien coming to visit in Justice League. It could also be a set up for the announced Green Lantern Corps film. Since DC is throwing everything at the wall until something sticks, the inclusion of a Green Lantern in Justice League comes as little surprise.

Is Emma Stone in Death Stranding?

This is from an article I wrote for The Nerd Stash –

Emma Stone is one of the most talked about actors in the world right now. She’s hot off her success with the smash hit film La La Land, but could she be involved with Hideo Kojima’s new game Death Stranding?

Death Stranding was revealed last E3 and it’s Kojima’s first new game after making Metal Gear Solid games for over 20 years. Right away in the reveal trailer, actor Norman Reedus was shown to be the protagonist of the game. A few months later in another trailer, Guillermo Del Toro and Mads Mikkelson were introduced to be included as well. It’s clear at this point Kojima is gathering a star-studded cast. Could Emma Stone be the next person on the list?

Yesterday Kojima tweeted that a female actress will be a part of Death Stranding. He didn’t say who, but since he’s naturally a cryptic guy he dropped some hints over Twitter. For quite some time, he’s been tweeting a lot about La La Land, which he seemed to love. He also mentioned meeting up with an actress last December and in a few series of tweets talked about La La Land. This has lead many to speculate Emma Stone could be in Death Stranding.

Mads Mikkelson in Death Stranding

Now to get even weirder, Kojima tweeted a picture of a female mannequin wearing a beanie that said “Lionsgate” on it. Lionsgate is the studio directly involved with La La Land. It could be a strange coincidence or it really could be that Stone is a character in Death Stranding. Kojima seems like a game developer who wants one foot in the gaming world and another in Hollywood. He’s an avid movie buff, and cinematically styled his past games like feature films. Now, with his new game, he’s blending movie and game making to the next level by casting popular actors.

Mystery Science Theater 3000 is Getting a Comic Book

Making fun of movies as they’re being watched, aka “riffing” is very prominent nowadays with YouTube. There are tons of channels out there that have people making fun of movies, both good and bad.  But, it’s a safe bet to think that some of them got inspiration from a 1990s TV show called Mystery Science Theater 3000.

From 1989-1999 Mystery Science Theater was a ground-breaking show about a man who’s accidentally shot in space, builds two talking robots, and is forced to watch bad movies by a mad scientist. No, really. The first few seasons starred comedian Joel Hodgson, who is also the creator. The robots he builds are named Crow and Tom Servo. After a few years, Joel is replaced by one of the show’s writers Michael J. Nelson. Even with the cast change, it remained extremely popular and a movie was released in 1995. It gained a massive following and is still remembered fondly to this day for its high-brow comedy and wit. Nearly 20 years since Mystery Science Theater ended, it’s being rebooted for streaming services, and Dark Horse comics is producing a comic book.

(left to right) Tom Servo, Mike Nelson, Crow

It’s unknown what the story will be. During the run of the original show, there was a plot going on between each movie screening. So, the comic could be a continuation of that. Obviously, riffing movies in comic form would be tough. Also as mentioned, Mystery Science Theater is in the process of being rebooted. At this time it’s unknown what streaming platform it will go to, though. A mix of new and old writers are returning, and now’s a good time as any to reboot this cult classic.

Mystery Science Theater was one of a kind and still holds a special place in peoples’ hearts. With the reboot and comic book right around the corner, a new generation will be introduced to MST, in the not-to-distant future.

Call Of Duty Returning To Its Roots In 2017

Call of Duty is the most successful video game franchise of all time. With yearly installments and three developers working on three separate games, it constantly remains the best selling game of each year.

In 2007 Call of Duty went from WWII, the setting it was founded in, to the modern times. COD: Modern Warfare was a smash it and to this day is one of the best games of all time. That milestone launched the franchise into superstardom and took the series in a new direction. The next few Call of Duty games were in the type same setting, until in 2016’s Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was released.

Infinite Warfare took the series into the far future with space battles, lasers, and interplanetary travel. Even though it was the best selling game of 2016, it was one of the lowest selling Call of Duty games. These less than stellar sales showed Activision that fans may by wanting a return to form. They made a statement that this year’s game will “take the series back to its roots”. Activision’s COO Thomas Tippl said:

“Traditional combat will once again take center stage”.

Call of Duty: World at War. The last time the series was in WWII.

There have been a few rumors of this before. They seemed to realize fans weren’t that interested in a futuristic space setting for their military shooters. However, at this time it’s unknown what the actual setting of the new Call of Duty will be. Some rumors suggest Vietnam, which has been a previous setting before. But it could be WWII again, seeing has the Battlefield games jumped back in time to WWI last year.

Activision has done a great job at keeping Call of Duty relevant for the past decade. With three developers handling three games on a rotating cycle, they’re able to pump out a game a year. It’s easy to see how it can grow stale, and the series has become the “cool new thing to hate” among fans. But numbers don’t like, and these games are top sellers each year. Although the past few entries haven’t met the high numbers as the ones before, Activision greenlit this year’s game a few years ago. It seems they had a plan in mind from the start.

Mel Gibson In Talks To Direct Suicide Squad 2

In what’s probably the most unexpected news of the week, Warner Bros is in the process of trying to court Mel Gibson to direct Suicide Squad 2. Gibson has had a shotty track record in Hollywood, but the ambitious director is trying to make amends.

In 2006, Gibson has arrested for drunk driving and then proceeded to yell Anti-Semitic words while in the back of the cop car. That, and a few other instances of drunken rampages, Gibson was blacklisted from Hollywood. Ten years later he directed the critically acclaimed Hacksaw Ridge film and now Hollywood seems to be welcoming him back.

Warner Bros has been struggling with trying to find their footing with the DC superhero movies. As everybody knows, Marvel has found enormous success in crafting their cinematic universe of superhero movies. Warner Bros, the company who has the rights to distribute DC Comics movies, hasn’t been that lucrative.

The Suicide Squad themselves

Man Of Steel, Batman V. Superman, and most recently Suicide Squad have all been box office successes but panned critically. There’s a multitude of reasons as to why these films fail on a movie making level, but Warner Bros has been saying they’re course correcting the way they do things, and it seems to hire Mel Gibson could be a part of that.

The problems with Suicide Squad stem from its editing, pacing, characters, and plot. Gibson, despite his personal life, is a great director and can work well with an ensemble cast. According to Variety, Warner Bros has a few other names in mind for Suicide Squad 2 in case Gibson doesn’t work out. Zombieland‘s Ruben Fleischer and Warm Bodies‘ Jonathan Levine are in the mix, but Gibson is their number one pick.

The director of the first Suicide Squad, David Ayer recently wrote a letter that kind of seems like an apology for how the film turned out. It’s unknown what really went wrong with the film behind the scenes, though. It seems that Warner Bros liked how Gibson directed Hacksaw Ridge, and they feel he would be a good fit for the next Suicide Squad.

Apple Reportedly Launching a 4K Apple TV

Streaming services and devices that utilize it are trumping standard TV services. Apple jumped on this bandwagon a few years ago when they launched the Apple TV, a device similar to a Roku Box. It comes with a multitude of channels to choose from and stream hours of content through the internet.

With the surge of 4K compatibility, Apple looks to take advantage of this and reportedly will launch a 4K streaming device in the near future. 4K TVs are out on the market, but they’re pretty pricey at the moment. There are already a few devices that can stream 4K, like the PlayStation 4 Pro and the Google Chromecast Ultra.

Bloomberg reports that Apple’s new 4K TV device will also support HDR (high dynamic range) if the customer’s TV is compatible. HDR equalizes the level of light on-screen to make images look more realistic and less washed out. Bloomberg also stated that Apple’s original intent was to have their TV replace cable set-top boxes altogether and stream live TV. Along with that, there were plans to release a video game console version.

The Apple TV device. It’s not an actual TV.

The only thing holding this new device back is this the weak sales of the previous TVs. They’re one of the lesser selling Apple devices, which is why they hired Timothy Twerdhal, former Amazon Fire chief, as a consultant to up their game. Amazon has seen success in their streaming devices, as they’re tied in the market with the Roku box.

Cable services have been going by the wayside for the past few years, with many people “cutting the cord.” As subscription services go up, prices for streaming services stay relativity cheap in comparison. With this new 4K TV device and with 4K itself slowly making its way into peoples’ homes, this could potentially be the right step for Apple. If not, there’s always the iPhone.

New Episode Of Telltale’s The Walking Dead Is Coming Soon

Clementine has been through a lot. At a very young age, the world went to hell and the dead began to walk. The zombies, or “walkers” as they’re called in this universe, quickly took over and society turned upside down.

After two seasons of turmoil, she’s managed to survive it all with the help of others. Telltale’s version of The Walking Dead has really grown into its own beast since its debut in 2012. The characters, dramatic storytelling and fun gameplay of season 1 put Telltale on the map as one of the best game developers around. Since then their Walking Dead games have remained their most popular IP.

Clementine and Javier stand guard

The third season debuted at the end of last year with two episodes being released back-to-back. The Ties That Bind parts one and two saw the induction of a new character, Javier and his struggle to keep his family intact two years after the dead rose. The past two Walking Dead seasons had Clementine as the central character, with the player making her choices and shaping their own version of her.

She’s now taking a back seat to Javier, the new lead whose decisions can be modified, and she shares a supporting role. The third episode in season three, titled Above The Law is due out “in early March” according to Telltale and should pick up right where episode two left off, which was a surprising cliff-hanger.

This is also Telltale’s first Walking Dead game on the current generation consoles. It shows because the graphical power and animation have been noticeably improved. That was something fans expressed dissatisfaction in as a lot of Telltale’s games encounter glitches and odd stutters. So far, the newest Walking Dead episodes have been fine.

For now, sit tight and think about your past story decisions and how they might affect the upcoming episode. It should be out in the next few weeks.

NBC Possibly Rebooting ‘American Idol’

American Idol is one of the longest-running reality TV shows. It lasted for 15 seasons, produced a large number of spin-offs, and helped people achieve their dreams of becoming a rockstar. Now, not even a year after it ended, there are rumors it will be rebooted by NBC.

When American Idol debuted in 2002 it was a revolutionary idea. A TV show that’s a singing contest? If you win, you become a world renowned star?! If you have singing chops and aren’t camera shy, it could be your chance at fame. Also, the show is remembered for some of the less than stellar acts, like William Hung.

According to TheWrap, American Idol is being shopped around “aggressively” to other networks by its production company and NBC has the highest bid. NBC is already home to a similar singing competition, The Voice. If NBC does end up rebooting AI, the network will have the monopoly in singing competition shows.

American Idol Panel of Judges

During AI’s long many ordinary people have become household names like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry, Phillip Phillips and the show’s host Ryan Seacrest. Even some of the contestants who didn’t win ended up getting noticed by other record companies and still making a name for themselves, like Clay Akin. Also, past contestants have gone on to win 13 Grammys, two Golden Globes, an Academy Award.

It’s a bit surprising that AI would be brought back to Television so soon. But, it seems that this might have been the plan all along. Series created Simon Fuller said last September:

“Thank you for bringing the show back in 2018, We can’t wait to make it.”

Perhaps Fuller and company just wanted to give the show a break after 14 years on TV. One big question is, though, if it returns will it be as popular as before? The Voice is now the top dog in singing shows, but if both shows are on the same channel, maybe they’ll share the top spot.

E3 Is Opening Its Doors To The Fans

E3, which actually stands for Electronic Entertainment Expo, is the Superbowl of the video game world. Every year developers celebrate what they love about the business by unveiling new games and hardware. The difference between the Superbowl and E3 though, is fans can go to the Superbowl, until now.

For years E3  was only open to the press, publishers, and developers. In the early 2000s, the event was open to the public but due the increasing popularity and limited space, the higher ups decided to limit who could come.  After ten or so years of E3 just being for people in the industry, regular fans will get the chance to go, with a high price of admission.

Photo from E3 2016

Some are wondering, is this a good idea? The yearly event is already very crowded with just the press alone. Should they add more people to the mix? Take a look at the two big comic book conventions, San Diego Comic Con and New York City Comic Con. I can speak from personal experience, the NYC Comic Con is extremely crowded. There were points where I couldn’t move forward because the aisles were jam packed.

The price of admission will be $250 and some might not think it will be worth it to pay that amount, then possibly wait in lines all day and not get into any press conferences because the max limit is reached. It’s even more expensive for someone who’s traveling. So, at the end of the day, the fan may not be getting their money’s worth.

There are many other video game conventions, like PAX East and PAX Prime, that let fans come and enjoy new games and tech. But, E3 has the popularity and lineage that makes it the most popular of them all. For some fans, any price of admission would be worth it as long as they go.
